Welcome, my brothers and sisters, to this week's reflection on the readings for the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, celebrated on the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B. Our first reading is taken from Acts of the Apostles, chapter 12, verses 1 to 11. The Psalm for this Sunday is Psalm 34. The second reading is from St. Paul's second letter to Timothy, chapter 4, verses 6 to 8 and 17 to 18. The Gospel reading is from St. Matthew's Gospel, chapter 16.
Today, we celebrate the feast of two unlikely and unique apostles of the first century: Simon the fisherman, renamed Peter, and Saul the persecutor of Christians, renamed Paul. Despite their pasts, both were transformed by the Holy Spirit into pillars of the early Church. Peter, who denied Jesus, and Paul, who persecuted Christians, were chosen and empowered to spread the message of mercy, love, and peace.
Their lives, poured out as a libation to the glory of God, serve as powerful examples of transformation and mission. Bishop Robert Barron describes Peter and Paul as elements of order and mission, representing the Church's energy, impetus, and life. We, too, are beneficiaries of their legacy, rescued from sin and death, and nurtured in God's mystical body.
Our task today is to look towards the Lord and help our brothers and sisters do the same. We must remain hopeful that the Lord will aid us in rebuilding a society of unity and peace, using our gifts to rescue and support those in need. As we commemorate Saints Peter and Paul, let us also pray for Pope Francis, Peter's successor, that he may continue to lead with strength and peace.
May the Lord bless us all and continue to use us for greater things to His glory. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our Lady Seat of Wisdom, pray for us.
